Goddess Maha Kali idol

In Hindu religion, every God and Goddess are said to have various forms of appearing before the worshippers or Bhaktas. Likewise, Goddess Kali is considered to be a mighty aspect of the Goddess Durga. As Goddess Kali denotes Time, Change, Power, Creation, Preservation and Destruction, Her appearance is that of a destroyer principally of evil forces. There are different traditions as to how Goddess Kali came into existence.

www.Goddess Maha Kali idolOne of the back stories is when the demon Raktabija was causing havoc. Each time he was attacked, more demons grew up from every drop of blood that fell on the ground. Then, the Gods decided of combining their powers and created Goddess Kali to uproot the evil demon. She then finished the demon and saved the people. There are many such traditions. Another of them was is her most well known appearance on the battlefield is in the sixth century Devi Mahatmyam. Two demons, Canda and Munda attack the goddess Durga. Durga responded with such anger that her face turns dark and Kali appeared out of her forehead. Kali’s appearance is black, gaunt with sunken eyes, and wearing a tiger skin and a garland of human heads. She immediately defeats the two demons.

Another origin stories involve Parvati and Shiva. Parvati is typically portrayed as a benign and friendly goddess. The Linga Purana describes Shiva asking Parvati to defeat the demon Daruka, who received a boon that would only allow a female to kill him. Parvati merged with Shiva’s body, reappearing as Kali to defeat Daruka and his armies. Her bloodlust got out of control, only calming when Shiva intervenes. The Vamana Purana has a different version of Kali’s relationship with Parvati. When Shiva addressed Parvati as Kali, “the black one,” she is greatly offended. Parvati performed austerities to lose her dark complexion and became Gauri, the golden one. Her dark sheath became Kausiki, who while enraged, created Kali.

The main puja of Goddess Kali is performed in the month of October and November of every year.

An idol of Goddess Kali can be found in different sizes but their effects are the same as She is the abode of knowledge and power.
